A Mental Health Perspective

Pastoring Prickly Parishioners

The focus of this time will be wondering, learning, and considering how pastors are to respond to parishioners who are challenging in an ongoing way. They may put unrealistic demands on the pastor and/or laity, act inappropriately, or cause disruptions in worship, meetings, or gatherings.

We will first attempt to understand these beloved ones from a developmental perspective. We will then look at examples for how to respond in effective ways that manage the behavior and prevent continual disruptions in congregational life.

Two case examples will be considered, although participants are encouraged to bring an example with them.

Pastors will receive a boundary training certificate from the conference office.

A question for contemplation as you anticipate participation: We welcome all, whoever they are and wherever they are on life’s journey. Does that mean we welcome all behavior?
